Mark Donohue

Mark standing with Karl Kainhoefer next to the Sunoco Lola AMC at Elkart Lake in 1973. The car was not lacking in horsepower as it had 497hp, verses Chevys 480hp, but the engine was taller and created alot of handling problems. Thanks to Tom Schultz and your excellent Road America book for this photo.

Mark in a rare moment relaxing, probably thinking of something to make a car go faster. When I could not find Mark, I could usualy find him hiding in the back of the team truck, in a similar pose.

Mark putting his 1971 Javelin thru its paces on its way to winning the 1971 SCCA TransAm series for the 3rd time.

One of Mark's first races at Marlboro, MD in his first real race car in 1961. He is leading the race, with Jay Signore (IROC Pres) and have been told that Bob Tullius and probably Eddie Diehl are behind Mark and Jay coming up the hill. A special thanks to Dave Sharp and Bob Gaunt for the information. I would like to find more pre Penske pictures of Mark to put in the gallery if anyone has any?

Mark sitting in his SUNOCO Mclaren M16 Offy at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1971. He had the fastest car all month and thought he had the race won before it started. On lap 66 (also his car number) he went out with gearbox trouble. Back in those days they just left the car there where it broke down. It was inside turn 4, and later in the race Mike Mosley and Bobby Unser crashed together in turn 4 and ran into Marks beautiful McLaren. I was sitting in turn 4 and saw the whole thing. I saw Mark and Roger looking at it after the wreck and they didn't look too happy. Thanks David L. Stringer for the photo.

Mark in his car at the Indianapolis 500 again in 1971. Im not sure what Karl Kainhofer might be doing, but hopefully it is doing up his seatbelts. The smile on Mark's face is priceless though. Thanks David L. Stringer for the photo.

A great picture of Mark in 1968 at Edmonton, when he was running in the SCCA Can-Am series. Thanks to Marilyn (Motschenbacher) Halder for sending the picture to share.
